As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, India has implemented several national-level policies to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and accelerate their adoption. However, please note that there may have been further developments since then. Here are some of the key EV policies and initiatives in India:
Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles (FAME): The FAME scheme was launched in 2015 by the Indian government to promote the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles in the country. Under FAME-II, which was launched in 2019 and extended till March 2024, the government provides financial incentives to buyers of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers, as well as electric buses and charging infrastructure.
National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP): Launched in 2013, the NEMMP aims to achieve significant electrification of the automotive industry and promote the manufacturing of electric and hybrid vehicles in India. It sets a target of 6-7 million sales of electric and hybrid vehicles by 2020.
Goods and Services Tax (GST) Reduction: To make EVs more affordable, the Indian government reduced the Goods and Services Tax on electric vehicles from 12% to 5% in 2019.
Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Program: In 2020, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed a ZEV program that would mandate a certain percentage of vehicle sales to be electric or hybrid. The exact details of the program were being finalized at the time of my knowledge cutoff.
National Electric Mobility Infrastructure Scheme (NEMIS): The NEMIS was launched in 2021 to support the development of robust charging infrastructure across the country. It aims to establish public charging stations in selected cities and along major highways.
Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP): The PMP is an initiative to promote local manufacturing of electric vehicle components and reduce dependence on imports. It offers incentives and support to manufacturers to set up production facilities in India.
Green Tax Incentives: Some Indian states have introduced green tax incentives to promote the use of electric vehicles. These incentives include lower registration fees and road tax for EVs.
It’s important to note that the Indian government has been actively working on promoting EVs and may have introduced new policies or made updates since my knowledge cutoff. I recommend referring to the official government websites or recent news sources for the most up-to-date information on EV policies in India.
